"Spice" on Earth. Book a cruise to The Strait of Hormuz 🎧 #622 (Mar 4)

A little historical context and market action
  • Mexico: Mexico is one of the few “Cradles of Civilization” (Mesoamerica) where agriculture and government developed independently. Before the Aztecs or Mayans, the Olmecs were building massive stone heads and complex cities as early as 1500 BCE.

  • Japan: Japan is a unique case. While the “Jomon” people were there much earlier, the roots of the Japanese state and culture we recognize today—with rice farming and social hierarchy—began with the Yayoi period migration and the legendary founding of the Imperial line (traditionally dated to 660 BCE, though archaeologically closer to 300 BCE).

  • Canada: Much like the USA, Canada’s “civilizational” identity as a nation-state began with European exploration and the fur trade. However, the First Nations (such as the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe) have inhabited the land for over 14,000 years, with complex governance systems like the Iroquois Confederacy predating European arrival.

  • If you are looking for the longest continuous government, Japan wins—its Imperial House is the oldest continuous hereditary monarchy in the world.

  • If you are looking for the oldest site of civilization, it's a tie between the Indus Valley (Pakistan/India) and Elam (Iran).

If you include indigenous people:
