Can Grok or various AI LLMs find stocks to short?

The short answer: with my free version of Grok, NO!

I ran two very similar prompts on Grok AI asking for short ideas. It produced two sorted lists and reasoning for shorts among the Nasdaq 100. (Click image to enlarge)

Looking at the top 10 of both lists, the green highlights are duplicates. So we have 15 distinct tickers with Grok’s reasoning.

Let’s add my human touch to the charts and walk through each one.

One that the AI missed and was WAY off mark was META (See what I did there!?)

AI said, “Sentiment bearish; auction balanced” and “Balanced sentiment” and pegged META as #39 and #45 as good short setups out of 100 tickers.

My Summary

I have been cautioning my premium readers since July when META was cooking higher, to wait until it can prove itself above $785 before you buy, as it has faked out quite a bit. And as you can see it carved out a range and failed to exceed $785 with any oomph and failed horribly. Now sitting below the 50 and 200 day ma, which is a no go for me.

But as it is losing the 200 day, it is also nosediving and the selling volume is picking up. Looks like a potential short to me. One of the more compelling as the weighting of META being so high, also provides some momentum for selling to pick up in panic. This should have been a top 3 pick for Grok but it missed it.
